Vitamin A

Did you know that Vitamin A is also known as retinoid and comes in many permutations. It speeds up the cell turnover and the exfoliation process and is good for targeting fine lines, sun damage and acne. According to skin whisperer and PhD-qualified scientist Dr Michele Squire, “Retinoids are an all-round powerhouse to reduce signs of ageing, sun damage and pigmentation……According to skin whisperer and PhD-qualified scientist Dr Michele Squire, “Retinoids are an all-round powerhouse to reduce signs of ageing, sun damage and pigmentation.” Dr Squire recommends a prescription-only version that has the potency to improve skin health. And remember with any vitamin A regime, make sure you only apply it at night, and follow with a broad spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen to protect skin from UV damage the next day. Build up application gradually as it can cause redness and flaking.

Hyaluronic acid

Skincare

Found in many moisturisers and prized for its water attracting capacity (it can attract and bind water at 1000 times its own weight) hyaluronic acid holds water on the skin’s surface layer temporarily plumping it and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Apply it to slightly damp skin.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

It’s nicknamed the skincare multi-tasker as it targets texture, oil production, redness and inflammation. It also helps to brighten skin and is a good companion to retinol as it helps to reduce irritation and prepares sensitive skin for retinol use.

Glycolic acid

Glycolic acid is part of a group of acids known as alpha-hydroxy acids and this one has the smallest molecular size, so it can penetrate the skin more easily. Glycolic acid is an exfoliator, dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells to improve skin texture and tone. When using it, err on the side of caution as you can over-exfoliate the skin. Once a week is ample.

Vitamin C

It is highly unstable when exposed to sun and air but over time formulations have improved vastly. It now comes housed in dark bottles and is best stored out of direct sunlight..

Hair & Nails

Vitamin C is a great antioxidant, helping to neutralise skin-damaging free radicals caused by exposure to environmental factors such as sun and pollution and it also hinders the production of excess pigment in the skin, helping to fade sunspots. It helps to stimulate collagen production which in turn leaves skin firmer and smoother by helping skin cells repair.

Nail Care

We always need proper and regular nourishment, as our hair, skin and nails can easily start to become dull, brittle and dry, losing that healthy glow which comes with a balanced lifestyle. This is where natural skin care, hair care and health supplements come in! To help improve the overall appearance of skin, the strength of nails and hair growth rate, I really recommend enlisting the help of a few different supplements and natural solutions to help boost and restore vitality to your body’s natural regenerative processes.

Dull hair, dry skin and nails prone to breakage can all be linked back to genetic factors, but they can also be affected by your everyday habits. To help encourage shiny hair, strong nails and hydrated skin, our Nourished Life Naturopath recommends taking natural vitamin and mineral supplements to support body function and cell regeneration.
If you want your nails to grow long, healthy and strong, it’s important to give them time to breathe, and that means removing your nail polish.

Omega-3s can also be helpful for maintaining youthful skin, as they reduce inflammation and regulate oil production to prevent acne and signs of aging. Research shows that the Omega-3 fatty acid EPA can also prevent the release of UV-induced enzymes that break down collagen and cause wrinkles and saggy skin.11

Similarly curcumin, the active component of turmeric, can help quell inflammation that leads to skin blemishes. Turmeric has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to provide a golden glow and luster to skin.12 Studies have even shown that curcumin may be beneficial for collagen production and accelerate wound heal
